Stout BooksCalling all design enthusiasts! On your next trip to San Francisco, set aside a few hours to visit William Stout Architectural Books, a veritable treasure-trove of hard-to-fine publications on architecture and design. Stout, who has been called the “Guru of design manuscripts,” opened his shop in 1974 based on the model of the great bookstores of Europe. Stout’s store, which is located in the financial district, soon become a hub for learning and information sharing among architects and art lovers. In recent years, Stout has ventured into publishing with reissues of out-of-print architectural source documents and other design-related books.

Among the store’s vast holdings are volumes on fine and decorative art, design, architecture, interiors, furniture, landscape, and urban planning. Lose yourself amid the teetering stacks of books and the grandeur of the buildings depicted inside them.
