Segesta, Sicily, ItalyLovers of classical literature and Mediterranean culture alike will delight in Smithsonian Tours’ “The Journey of Odysseus” (June 19 - 30, 2008). Tourgoers on this eleven-day study trip travel in style aboard the Corinthian II, a deluxe all-suite mega-yacht, as they retrace Odysseus’ legendary journey as recorded in Homer’s classic tale, The Odyssey.

Homer’s epic is more than just a poem for the literati – it is a beacon to the modern-day adventure traveler! Join study leader Jeffrey Hurwit, Professor of Classical Art History at the University of Oregon, as he follows Odysseus’ path through Turkey, Greece, Malta, and Italy – from the burning towers of Troy to the enchanted realms of gods and nymphs. The tour ends in Ithaca, Odysseus’ legendary homeland.

Through lectures and informal discussions, Hurwit shares his deep knowledge of Classical Mediterranean art and culture with participants on what he calls “an extraordinary and unforgettable journey, following the route of one of the most important figures in the western imagination.”

Highlights of Hurwit’s tour include: the uninhabited island of Delos, a veritable open-air museum of classical civilization; the Palace of Nestor – a testament to the grandeur of the Mycenaeans; and the Cyclopean Walls, a ruin known locally as Odysseus’ Castle. Soak up the balmy Mediterranean sea air while you enjoy an evening sail through the splendid Corinth Canal.
