Letterpress lettersNew York City is a great place to live if you love letters and type like I do.

1. Class: Letterpress Printing at Center for Book Arts
Letterpress instructor and master printer Barbara Henry showed me how to hand typeset metal type and print from it on a Vandercook press. Every student left class with a printed poem.

2. Museum: Bowne Co. Stationers at the South Street Seaport Museum
This out-of-the-way, working recreation of a nineteenth-century print shop, under the management of artist Robert Warner, is completely charming.

3. Website: www.typophile.com
Opinions and design help from typemaniacs around the world!

4. Calligrapher: Deborah Delaney
Deborah is kept very busy creating distinctive and beautiful calligraphy for weddings and events.

5. Type Designers: Hoefler Frere-Jones
This New York firm is headed by two designers who not only design excellent typefaces but prowl the city streets documenting signs and everyday typography. Their website, www.typography.com, reveals the obsessive research behind their products.
